Kuldīga’s Leaning Tower, and What You See From It

Twenty-five metres of steel in Pārventa Park, tilted twelve degrees, which is a good deal more than Pisa.

Kuldīga opened its viewing tower in 2024, in Pārventa Park on the far bank, inside the Venta Valley nature reserve. It’s 25 metres tall, built of metal, lit after dark, and deliberately leaning, at a tilt of about twelve degrees. That’s a steeper lean than the tower at Pisa, a comparison the town has been happy to make.

There are platforms at several levels, so the view builds as you climb. Lower down you’re level with the treetops. Higher up the old town opens out with its red roofs, and you can trace the Venta, the brick bridge and the line of the falls all in one sweep. It’s the one place you can see how the whole town sits in the river valley.

It works best late in the day, when the light is low across the roofs and the brick of the bridge turns deep red. Going up twice is worth it, once in daylight and once after they light it.

Getting there is a walk over the brick bridge and into the park, about twenty minutes from the apartments on foot.
